WHAT WE DO
We provide refurbished tools and equipment to training projects, polytechnics and self-help
groups who are working with the following categories of disadvantaged people - secondary school dropouts, young people rescued from the streets, the unemployed, people living with HIV/Aids, people with disabilities, widows and orphans.
WHERE DO WE HELP?
We work in East and Central Africa in specific areas of the following countries:
- Kenya - mainly in the Kisii and Western area and also the Nairobi area - our partners are based in Kisii
- Uganda- mainly areas within 100km of Kampala where our partners are based
- Zambia - mainly in the copperbelt area - our partners are based in Ndola
- We are also slowly developing links in parts of Malawi and Tanzania
OUR APPLICATION CRITERIA
- Groups must already be active
- The main beneficiaries should be unemployed youth, widows and orphans, disabled, people living with HIV/Aids
- The group should be able to demonstrate some sort of financial stability
- Groups should have suitable premises and secure storage facilities
- Groups should be registered with the appropriate Government Department
WHAT CAN WE SUPPLY?
- Hand tool kits for the following trades - carpentry, masonry, mechanics and motor vehicle maintenance, electrical, plumbing, leatherwork and shoe making, horticulture.
- sewing machines
- knitting machines
- typewriters
WHAT WE DO NOT DO
- We do not supply computers or computing equipment
- We do not supply photocopiers
- We cannot provide money or financial help in any form
HOW TO MAKE AN APPLICATION
- Send a letter by post/e-mail stating clearly -
- Where you are and the name and address of the project
- What activities your project currently undertakes
- How many beneficiaries there are
- What tools/equipment you are asking for
Send the letter of application together with copies of any registration certificates and a letter
of reference from a local community/church/NGO leader
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER WE RECEIVE YOUR APPLICATION?
- All applications are considered by our Project Review Group
- Some projects will be rejected - this may be because -
- we are overwhelmed with requests
- the project is far from areas where we are able to visit or assess
- the project does not meet our criteria
- we are not happy with the application
- Other projects will be sent a Project Review Document to fill in and return to us giving us
more detailed information about the activities of the group
- If approved, our partners in the country will arrange to visit the project to verify the
information you have given and to clarify any details
- Once approved it may be another 6-12 months before you receive your consignment - we contact you when we are about to despatch the goods and explain the procedure for you to collect them when they arrive in your country
ARE ANY COSTS INVOLVED?
Workaid provides the tools and equipment free of charge and pays the cost of transport to our distribution point- usually the base of one of our partners
You will need to arrange transport to collect the equipment from our partners and deliver to your project; and to pay for this. However there will be no charges from our partners.
WE ARE A SMALL CHARITY RELYING ON THE WORK OF VOLUNTEERS AND THERE IS A LIMIT TO HOW MANY GROUPS WE CAN HELP
AT PRESENT WE ARE ONLY ABLE TO HELP ABOUT A THIRD OF THE GROUPS WHO APPLY TO US
